Lineweights in Rhino and Illustrator - demo
Architectural Graphics - Francis Ching (download PDF)
Site Plan
- 1/8"=1'-0" or 1/6"=1'0"
- This drawing describes the relationship of the project to its surroundings:
- "Top View" or First Floor Plan
- Streets and sidewalks
- Adjacent buildings
- Site features:
- Landscaping (plants, walls)
- Hardscape (walkways and driveways)
- Basic labels including scale and north arrow
Floor Plan
- 1/4" =1'-0" or 3/16"=1'-0"
- This drawing describes the layout of the floor level. It should focus on showing movement and visibility.
- Only the first floor indicates site features. Upper floors (and basements) only show items on that level, though they might show property lines.
- Horizontal slice through the project, at approximately 3 or 4 feet above the floor level, looking down. Anything that is actually cut through is a thick line. Lines get thinner as they move closer to the floor surface.
- Very Thick Lines (0.7mm): For emphasis only - e.g. property lines, adjacent building outlines
- Thick lines (0.5mm): Anything that is cut through - full height walls, window frames and glass
- Medium lines (0.3mm): Doors (but not swings), low walls (even if above the cut line if they are not full height), counters, guardrails and handrails
- Thin lines (0.2mm): Furniture (including built-in furniture), cabinetry, shelving
- Very thin lines (0.1mm): Stairs and ramps, anything at the floor surface(floor patterns, changes in floor material), anything that's not actually constructed (graphics, hatch patterns, door swings, text and dimensions
- Dashed lines - always very thin (0.1mm): indicating things above the cut line or hidden below items such as furniture. This should be used sparingly.
- Basic labels including scale and north arrow
Reflected Ceiling Plan
- 1/4" =1'-0" or 3/16"=1'-0"
- This drawing describes the layout of items above the cut line, especially items on the ceiling.
- Horizontal slice through the project, at approximately 3 or 4 feet above the floor level, looking UP - but superimposed on the plan. Anything that is actually cut through is a thick line. Lines get thinner as they move closer to the ceiling surface.
- Very Thick Lines (0.7mm): For emphasis only - e.g. property lines
- Thick lines (0.5mm): Anything that is cut through - full height walls, window frames and glass
- Medium lines (0.3mm): Doors (but not swings), low walls (even if above the cut line if they are not full height), counters, guardrails and handrails
- Doors and swings are not shown, instead the lines of the door opening are shown.
- Basic labels including scale and north arrow
Elevation
- Scale typically matches the floor plans
- This drawing describes the appearance of the entire building from the exterior, shown as a projection (front, side, back).
- Very Thick Lines (0.7mm): Ground plane, and items for emphasis
- The GROUND PLANE should be emphasized as a thick line with tone beneath. Extend to show adjacent buildings, sidewalks and streets
- Thick lines (0.5mm): OUTLINE of entire building. If the facade is not a single plane, use this to outline the volumes closest to the viewer.
- Since an elevation is not a SLICE through the building, the outline of the building is emphasized, rather than the cut plane.
- Medium lines (0.3mm): Outline volumes in the middle distance.
- Thin lines (0.2mm): Window, doors and outlines of volumes farther from the viewer.
- Very thin lines (0.1mm): Items farthest from the viewer and any other details on surfaces.
- Basic labels including scale
Section
- Scale typically matches the floor plans
- This drawing describes a SLICE through the ENTIRE BUILDING - indicate the location of the slice and the direction of view using section marks on the floor plans. BE CAREFUL NOT TO SHOW TOO MUCH INFORMATION BEYOND THE CUT PLANE AS IT CAN BE DISTRACTING.
- Very Thick Lines (0.7mm): For emphasis only
- Thick lines (0.5mm): Anything that is cut through - floors and roof, full height walls, window frames and glass
- Medium lines (0.3mm): Items in the middle distance
- Thin lines (0.2mm): Window, doors and outlines of volumes farther from the viewer.
- Very thin lines (0.1mm): Items farthest from the viewer and any other details on surfaces.
- Basic labels including scale
